Port from previous machine. Where are the file prefrences?

Post by MarkDilley »

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what files to transfer to my new machine.

Any direction would be great, thanks.

Mark

p.s. I would love a wiki for camino... maybe I will go to there and create a link to <a href=http://wikitosh.com/wiki/pmwiki.php/Wikitosh/CaminoBrowser">CaminoBrowser</a>

Copy the complete profile folder to the same location on your new computer:
~/Library/Application Support/Camino/

That should take care of your bookmarks, cookies, user preferences, etc.

The file ~/Library/Preferences/com.mozilla.navigator.plist or ~/Library/Preferences/com.mozilla.camino.plist (more recent versions) also stores a few settings, like your toolbar layout and window positions.

What for (i.e., what sort of content do you foresee in this wiki?)?

There's already a Camino section of the MozillaZine Knowledge Base (wiki), which is more-or-less unmaintained and whose content is almost entirely a copy of, or reference to, documentation at caminobrowser.org. (And if there's something that deserves spelling-out, it really should be added to cb.o--or PimpMyCamino, for add-on type stuff. There aren't enough people to handle tasks as-is, so let's try not to duplicate efforts :-))

What am I thinking about? That's org.mozilla.*, of course!

Uncle Asad, wiki are a great tool for letting anyone take the signal from the thread mess that are forums and create really useful documents such as a FrequentlyAskedQuestions page at a wiki... I created <a href="http://wikitosh.com/wiki/pmwiki.php/Wikitosh/CaminoBrowser">CaminoBrowser</a> over at the Wikitosh, mac lover wiki, for anyone who wants to easily self organize the information here.

I understand that. I do that all the time at another project (which has no documentation, etc. on its website, and where only one extremely busy person has access to that website). What I'm saying is that 1) we have a really good website on cb.o, with lots of documentation and FAQs and so forth, and a Camino Forum FAQ for this forum, and 2) rather than split our efforts, duplicate efforts and content, and spread ourselves even thinner, we should consolidate our efforts and improve the existing stores of information (cb.o). We don't have the user base and volunteer base of something like Firefox.... And 3) most of the stuff in this forum is "noise"--only relevant for a short time; the "signal" is already in the Forum FAQ or on cb.o.

Part of the reason cb.o exists is to provide a central point to gather Camino information and to get that info off of mozilla.org so it could be more flexible and up-to-date (i.e., not having to wait for Mike or Simon to check in changes to the website...). If there's something missing from cb.o, write it up, file a bug against the Product Site component of Camino, and attach the text. Until there's needed content that doesn't make it to cb.o and the team running cb.o doesn't respond to offers of help, I see no reason to "fork" content-generation efforts--and if that were the case, I'd start by reusing the pages in the MozillaZine Knowledge Base wiki anyway.

You just haven't convinced me that there's content that's 1) needed and 2) can't/won't find a home either on cb.o or in the Forum FAQ, that's all :-) But it's a free world, so feel free to do whatever you choose :-)

Hmmm,

I think that it is ok for people to work with the information in any way that helps them understand it, I don't think in forums.

Having said that, I will respect your wishes to not split my efforts, I will do one of the other projects I work on. I enjoy the work here, glad for it, will be back occasionaly to ask questions!

Best, Mark

(p.s. I am extremely conscious that the additional conversation on this thread is noise, and wish I could delete it in whole.)
