It happend, first infrequent, then on every boot, that tb crashes on first open until now.
after installing office(xp) tb continues crashes. so i took a closer look what does the crash, used the disassembly debugger, to force it to run with no success... that is where i never succede :(
so it was js3250.dll that crashes, i searched for it, tested it for a virus, but everything was right..
i replaced it with the original no effect...
i tryed several other versions of that dll, until that of firebird 0.61 did the job.

could anyone explain what this dll does (javascript?), and why it crashed (before and after officexp)

I can confirm this issue. I get it 90% of the times if I hit the Write button within the seconds the Thunderbird window appears on-screen. I don't know if it's of any importance but I use an IMAP account that is checked for mail on start (and Thunderbird 0.3).

If I leave the window alone, maybe read one-two emails and then I hit the Write button in 90% of the cases it doesn't happen. :)

XP comes up with the Send/Don't Send error report and it lists atop:
AppName: thunde~1.exe AppVer: 1.5.20031.1319 ModName: js3250.dll
ModVer: 4.0.0.0 Offset: 00027c93

I have the generated appcompat.txt file that contains more information about it. I can send it to somebody if interested.

I cannot load Thunderbird at all. It comes up with a notice about JS3250 and then closes. I have since downloaded the latest build .4a which worked once, and then subsequently wouldnt load either.
Mozilla mail works ok (1.6a) and Firebird is ok. This problem seems to come after I downloaded Quick Notes and installed it in Thunderbird. I was about to make this my default mail client but since it doesnt load, that is now impractical.

Someone suggested erasing xul.mfl from the profile, and that worked.
I can now load thunderbird and it appears to be alright..
Does anyone have a clue?

I have even done what some other posts suggested, that is take the js3250.dll from Thunderbird 0.1 and replace the one in 0.3.

While for some people it seemed to work for me it didn't.
I have addressContext, Quote Colors and Tagzilla installed.

I get the same error periodically, when starting Thunderbird 0.3 using the WinXP default mail shortcut on the Start Menu.

Error:
AppName: thunde~1.exe
AppVer: 1.5.20031.1319
ModName: js3250.dll
ModVer: 4.0.0.0
Offset: 0001c7c6

But when I start TB from the regular app shortcut in its Start Menu folder, it starts without error. I haven't been able to determine if the "E-Mail" default mail button starts the app with any command-line options, but I know the normal shortcut runs just the app.

If I go into the TB Options and deselect the option to set TB as the default mail app, then restart the app and select the option again, the problem goes away for a while.

I have been having a problem with crashes related to this file myself. I nearly drove myself crazy trying different version of Thunderbird with no luck. I finally related it to installing JSlib, that is when the problem seems to show up.

I have developed this work-around to get the program started. Seems to work every time. Start a browser window, find a "mailto" link and click it. It should open a compose window. With the window open, start Thunderbird. Don't ask my why this works. The real question is, will the inverse work? Can you start Thunderbird and click on a web link to start Firebird if it's having the same problem?

...just a thought.

I kept getting this error after installing quick notes. I've now uninstalled quicknotes from the extension and no longer get the errors.

Disabling quicknotes does not seem to effect the crashes that occur when clicking the 'write' button. I still think it is JSlib casuing the problem.

I too installed QNote and never had problems before.
Now I have as most of you have here that js3250.dll file failure.

I'll uninstall QN and see how it goes.

Well how do I uninstall QNote if I can't even load TB?
Any file to change?

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is a howto posted by Sboulema, 9th Oct 2003 on the MozFirebird forum -- see link in jcraig's message. thanks for the lin jcraig!

Uninstalling Extensions
Until the uninstall feature for extensions is implemented (bug 170006), use this procedure as a workaround:

1. Exit Mozilla Firebird
2. Change to the chrome dir of your Mozilla Firebird application dir
3. Delete chrome.rdf and the overlayinfo dir (they are regenerated on next start)
4. Delete [extension].jar (or the [extension] dir, if it's used unpacked)
5. Remove every line with a reference to [extension] from installed-chrome.txt (usually there are two: one to the content and one to the locale)
6. A few extensions might use additional files; TBE for example has a tabextensions.js in [Phoenix dir]/defaults/pref to store its defaults in. Search through your app dir for such files and delete them.
7. Restart Mozilla Firebird

It seems to have worked for me. I've been able to launch ThunderB, and Quicknote has disappeared from the list of extensions in "Options".

However I should make two remarks.
I deleted both the chrome file and overlay stuff in the main directory and in the profile dir since I remembered installing Quicknote in the profile dir.

In thunderbird\Chrome\Install-chrome.txt I found the following line:

skin,install,url,jar:resource:/chrome/qute.jar!/skin/classic/global/

Do you know what "qute" stands for?

I didn't find any mention of quicknote in that file.

Deleting quicknote.jar, chrome.rdf and the overlay dir did the trick.

Thanks for your help!
I'll pass on the info to the spiderrzilla forum on mozdev extensionroom where I'd asked how to uninstall that extension (to install the new version).

Following my own hunch, I used the previously described method to remove JSlib. The crash related to clicking the 'write' button did cease. Quicknotes is still installed, however.
