HOWTO Parental Control, Content Filtering, Surfing Anon

Post by craigevil »

How to block content, parental controls, Surf anonymously:
Here are some helpful links to get you started in your search.
Parental controls
DansGuardian - True Web Content Filtering for All
Adblock G. Filter
Firefox Extensions - Privacy And Security
Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk.
Quick HOWTO: Controlling Web Access With Squid
Internet Blocking and Filtering Software in the Yahoo! Directory
SafeSurf Only works in Windows and IE
Welcome to My Linux ISP
Tor: An anonymous Internet communication system Tor used with Privoxy will allow you to surf anonymously, even IM securely.
Tor: MS Windows Install Instructions

Apparently the Block XXX extension is not working with Firefox 1.5, but the Procon extensions does the same thing.

"ProCon is a content filter for the Firefox browser, based on BlockXXX (by Tom Christensen). ProCon filters any type of web pages, but if left on default it limits itself to filter pages containing explicit content automatically, based on the text. ProCon can also censure any single word, and create a WhiteList."
http://procon.mozdev.org/

Here are some simple steps to keep unwanted material from whomever:
1) Enable Safesearch on Google, Yahoo and any other search engine people may use.
2) Use DansGuardian - True Web Content Filtering for All
3) Use Firefox along with ProCon and AdBlock Plus A good way to keep your filter list updated is to use Adblock Filterset.G Updater.

Other ways to blockweb sites
Use a HOSTS file Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

Of course the easiest way is to simply use 3rd party software.
Take a look at:

* http://www.icra.org/
* http://www.netnanny.com
* http://www.cyberpatrol.com/
* http://www.mylinuxisp.com Filtering ISP.

Things to take a look at concerning Parental Control Software;
CYBERsitter Examined
And how easy it is for people to find ways around the software.
Doing a Google search for almost any 3rd party software will also show sites with ways to by-pass the same software.

Some ISPs provide free parental controls. Contact your ISP for more information.

From hellene, a User Support Moderator on the Mozillazine Firefox Support Forum:
"BlockXXX is not a real solution because it 1) only works with Firefox 2) it only looks for certain keywords and then disables pictures on the page (sometimes after they have loaded).
The only real solutions I have found that work are commercial software.
The best are ZoneAlarm Security Suite and ContentWatch ContentProtect. These both have Category filterting and work very well. ZASS uses real time dynamic filterting (BlueCoat Database) whereas ContentProtect uses downloaded lists.
There are other products like BitDefender IS which let you make exception lists to say "allow all sites except these" OR "block all sites except these".

http://www.agnitum.com/
http://www.contentwatch.com/
www.bitdefender.com/

There are many ways of filtering content , none are full proof. As with PC security a layered approach is best. There are ways around pretty much everything and someone that is curious and has lots of time can figure out how to bypass most products. Using an ISP that filters content can be a good idea, but has it's drawback as well. There are many Christian ISPs that filter content.

Please DO NOT post arguments for or against filtering.

Keep in mind that Firefox by itself while a great browser does not filter or block any type of content.

There are NO built in Parental Controls so don't bother to look for them. Technically I am wrong.
There is a way to block sites with Firefox itself:
Mozilla/FireFox security policies (which is similar to zones in IE).
It can be done manually by reading: Configurable Security Policies ... and ... Security Policies
.... or ...
Policy Manager a extension for managing Site Policies, a security feature, (like IE's "security zones"). This package includes manager GUI and a context menu extension to set the site's policy easily.
Author's homepage for this extension.
Read: Security Policies

Posted this in reply to a question but it applies generally.
Almost all parental controls are easy to bypass. All it takes is a kid having a friend who knows how to do it.
The most effective way to keep control if you have broadband is to enable logging on the router or dsl or cable modem, and password protect the modem. Then you can check where people are going to in the logs, and discipline them if things are found. Just learn how to tell the difference between spyware hitting bad sites and actual adult browsing, you don't want to accuse someone falsely.

If you have dialup, it isn't as easy. The preferred solution then is to choose an ISP that allows parental controls (mainly AOL, but there are some other choices).

ZoneAlarm and ContentProtect

Post by bwwhite »

Be aware that the latest version of ContentProtect is not compatible with ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

The two existed just fine until the latest "upgrade" of ContentProtect. I had generally been happy with CP, but the email I got from support last night told me CP and ZA were definitely incompatible. They recommended I uninstall ZoneAlarm. Instead, I'm going to shop for different parental control software. I think I'll give CyberPatrol and SafeEyes a look.

I may go back to CP again (I paid good money for it) if they fix the incompatibility, but I won't remove ZoneAlarm.

My family uses My Kids Browser. It is inexpensive and is not subscription based. It's effective and the kids love it.

RMc23,

Look at manual for your modem, or do a search for a manual for that modem thru Google (or other search engine). Does your Cable ISP have a support IRC address or a support forum? Look there for help. The main thing you need to know is the Brand-name and the model number of that modem - look at the serial number nameplate for that info, on the bottom or back of the unit.

Some of those links are out of date. These are:
Adblock G. Filter - Adblock Plus with subscription is better with the latest Firefox versions.
Firefox Extensions - Privacy And Security - This leads to a "page not found" error.

That's the problem with people resurrecting threads that are pushing two years old.

K-9 Filter

The K-9 filter is also a free filter that doesn't use much of your computer's resources. Just do a search on Google for it.
