i'll repost this from the closed thread:
uhm i don't get this blocking 1.8.1 , there are many crasher in blocking 1.8.1 so are they going to release a buggy 1.5 just for the sake of release it?
the new roadmap looks like a mess , firefox 2.0 looks like what 1.5 would have been without the release at any cost syndrome while ff 3.0 shifted to 2007.. dunno what to say

They are going to take full advantage of the update system

ok, i'm still not straight on this whole trunk branch thing.
what i thought (and apparently what many thought): 1.5 would be launched off of the 1.8 branch and 2.0 would be launch off of the 1.9 branch
what it seems now: 1.5 will be launched off of the 1.8 branch and 2.0 will be launched off of the 1.8.1 branch and 3.0 will be launched off of the 1.9 branch.
can we absolutely confirm this? if so, are they going to include (as of yet) trunk only stuff into the 1.8.1 branch? like native theme rendering? or is native theme rendering going to be included in a 1.5.0.1 release of firefox? thats the big one that is keeping me on trunk instead of branch.
what would make more sense would be to branch again right after the release of 1.5. cause peter(6) only has 3 bugs on the trunk red list. which means trunk is not much more busted than branch. then 1.5 would get in all the trunk fixes like native theme rendering. just a thought.

FF 1.5 to 2.0 will be from the gecko 1.8 branch
FF2.0+ (3.0) will be from the gecko 1.9 trunk
the reason is that the implementation of Cairo is expected to take 1.5 years , which is too long to keep a 1 year releae skedule.
@ColdFusion650
Trunk will be hell in the month to come, on all OS
The current # of reds is very misleading, this is just because the number of people using trunk AND reporting the bugs is very limited compared to branch.

You know, i'm kinda confused with this 2.0 thingy, so the trunk will be 3.0, and 2.0 will branch from 1.5?

wow 1.5 years , i'm not sure what cairo is, if it's what i think a whole new gfx backend then it's just a waste of time and energies because gdi+ works just fine not mentioning that vista will have a new and powerfull rendering engine and that ogl will be crippled on it.
Reinventing the wheel sucks just use whatever is native for the os, i know that the reply will be ff is supposed to be multiplatform blah blah and stuff like that , sorry if i misunderstood what cairo is

cairo is just necessary in order to cut the gfx-codesize by up to 2/3 and to improve rendering on all platforms.

No, 2.0 is just a developped version of 1.5 and still on the gecko 1.8 branch.
Something like what's normal for windows... regular servicepacks. See it like the way XP and Vista coexist.

I vaguely remember that this issue could have been discussed before, but I can't find anything about it:
When I select: Tools --> Options--> Advanced --> Update --> Show update history,
the window only shows the most recent update (update channel: 'nightly'). This is a little confusing because one would expect a list of all previous updates.
Does anybody have the same problem?

You vaguely remember because that was vaguely discussed...I posted something but got no answers.
I think the same as you...

also is it accurate that it describes them as security updates every time?

So far, yes.
One recent change--although I'm not sure when it happened--is that now updates are reported as having been installed rather than as being pending. (I'm sure that this will engender a typical lengthy discussion of an extremely minor and rather unimportant point, sigh.)

i think someone should update the trunk and branch faq or make a new sticky topic to clarify this "Firefox 2.0 = Gecko 1.8.1 and Firefox 3.0 = Gecko 1.9" thing
if no one is willing to do it, i'll make one if it's okay with the moderators
