0.7 Linux i486/i586 stripped builds (for older hardware)

Post by vande198 »

Here's a couple builds *optimized* for older hardware as stipulated in this string: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=34856&highlight=

Platform: Arch Linux Current
Compiler: GCC 3.3.2
GLIBC: 2.3.2
Opt. flag: "-Os -march=i586"
Requires Pentium I and up
get it here: http://www.msu.edu/~vande198/MozillaFirebird-i586-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

Platform: Arch Linux Current
Compiler: GCC 3.3.2
GLIBC: 2.3.2
Opt. flag: "-Os -march=i486 -mcpu=i686"
Requires i486 and up. Optimized for pentium pro and up.
get it here: http://www.msu.edu/~vande198/MozillaFirebird-i486-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

PS...how do you change the "About Mozilla Firebird" Dialogue (it's on i686 instead of i586)

My intial findings seem to suggest that this build is faster (my feel) and uses significantly less RAM than a hyper-optimized (for pentium4 w/sse2) standard build w/gtk2 and sft support.

e.g. 13% of RAM on start up rather than 18% w/standard build.
This is with --optimize"-Os -march=i586" !

Sweet. I'm about to buy a PII-333/128MB laptop and this wil be perfect. As long as it will run Mandrake 9.2...

Who am I kidding - it will run Windows 2000, it will run Gnome no problem. Thanks for making the world a better place.

Just in time too - I'm cancelling my high-speed ISP pretty soon. Thx.

I should warn you that these builds do NOT have gtk2 and xft enabled, so they will not look all that nice.
