Worst Firefox Crash Ever!

Post by Too_Frustrated »

Please help! I upgraded to 1.5 a while ago and have had some minor problems, but tonight when I logged in all of my extensions, bookmarks and search engines (every single one) were gone. I have lost my bookmarks and extensions before with older versions of Firefox, but I have never lost ALL the search engines.

Now, I can't even add a search engine. I went to the page where they are and I clicked on Wikipedia. A dialog box popped up with the familiar message, I clicked okay, and nothing happened. I can't figure out what is going on. Honestly, I'm getting tired of the bugginess of this browser. I am considering going back to IE (and I really don't want to do that!).

Please help.

Go into your profile folder, find localstore.rdf and delete it with firefox closed, this will get rid of your toolbar customizations but will allow you change them back and add search plugins again.

No. I didn't miss that post. It doesn't answer my question about the search engines, it does answer the question about the bookmarks, but since I already had them backed up it wasn't an issue. Thanks for all of your help.

Thanks. It doesn't seem to have done anything. All I have in the search window is the magnifying glass. I'm still unable to add any search engines. The weird thing is that I can see them in my profile, they just aren't in the search window.

Actually, I have the same problem. I have been using Firefox for over a year now and this is the first problem that I have had. The frequently asked questions didn't help. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I lost all of the bookmarks that I have, all of the search options (even the ones that come with firefox when you download it) and I can't add a bookmark or a search.

Works fine on other identities on the computer, but not on the one I use.

3rd person today with the exact same problem? Little strange.

Well I’m proud of myself anyways. Tonite after seeing that quite a few people seem to have had this issue I was determined to make it work. And compared to most people here trust me its a miracle if I can get anything to work.
Ok so first I reinstalled once again just to make sure. It obviously didn’t change. Still the stupid lil magnify glass glaring at me. So I tried what "name already taken" suggested although again I had no hope as i had tried this also. We know where this is going...
So while doing al this I noticed that i had a folder under C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox/searchengines with search engine stuff in it. It was just the default engines. I also have a folder in my profile names that with the engines I had installed.
I turned Firefox off deleted the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox/searchengines with the default ones in it and just for safe measure deleted the localstore.rdf too.
Load firefox and by the miracle of something the search engines I wanted and had installed are back and working!
I know whatever i did different this time was mostly likely a pure accident but man I’m feeling cool right now! Hope this helps anyone else!!

I now have it up and working again, but I have to start over with the bookmarks and search engines, but at least I can add them again! I wound up having to uninstall Firefox, remove all traces of it and then reinstall it.

I wonder if this is a coincidence?

Another friendly response by Firefox user. See, this is why some people are leaving FF because of the short tempered users. I may be out the door next because I have been treated this way too. Not everyone knows how to properly search the forums. Take a fu**** chill pill.

The FAQ does not help much, it tells you how to get the bookmarks back ONLY. It doesnt help with customizations and search engines. A nice idea would be a solution that PREVENTS this from happening, im sick of having to go through all these methods when every other internet browser doesnt have thsi problem. A solution to PREVENT this would be great.

Unfortunately this is how it always seems to be on the internet.

I hope a bug is on file about this but I don't know for sure, if anyone knows can you PM me the bug number or post it here? I'll see if I can get a mod to add this problem to the FAQ.

Hardly the "worst Firefox crash ever". Back in the Firebird days I wrote some script to userChrome.css that crashed the X-Server and rebooted the computer. Now, that's a crash. :P

I know. I was irritated by it too. Not because I couldn't use the search feature but because the person who posted this response apparently didn't even read what I wrote. My answer was certainly not "in there". This is the main reason I don't frequent message boards of any type-too many people like this just waiting for a chance to make themselves feel superior.

Anyway, I have managed to bring my browser almost all the way back to where it was, but the frustration this has caused me has basically led me to start shopping for a new browser.

I have the same problem - bookmarks gone, search engines broken, AND my extensions don't work and I can't install more. I tried everything mentioned above and nothing worked. Any ideas?
