Can't send an email to a hotmail address ???

Post by rustolemite »

Using my Bellsouth.net email server I can not send a email to any Hotmail adderss, I can switch over to Outlook Express and using the same email server I send emails to the same hotmail address without any problem ... here's the error I get ..

the server responded:relaying mail to hotmail.com is not allowed. Please verify the your email address is correct in your mail preferences and try again.

thanks for any help

Maybe the smtp server has some send filters that Outlook can't read. Try with one more client to see if that's the problem, good luck ;)

Unfortunately, Microsoft, the company who owns Hotmail is using unethical business practices again. Another user found this:

This is not caused by Thunderbird. Hotmail has done some nasty things in their spam blocking filters. Another poster found this:

Hi,

I have been analyzing a problem sending to Hotmail from Thunderbird.
This is the results of my analysis.

Problem:

Intermittently, can't send messages to hotmail.

Solution:

Insert HTML formatting in message and vary message contents.

Factors:

It looks like a Baysian e-mail filter between Bell Sympatico and Hotmail is
being used to automatically delete e-mail messages. They DO NOT show up in
the Junk E-mail folder on the hotmail account.

Baysian filters use a technology that weights a number of factors to
determine if a message will be sent. +1 represents likelyhood of
uccess. -1 represents likelyhood of failure. If you score low on too many
chategories, the e-mail will be deleted.

Server:
smtp*.sympatico.ca -1 (likely failure)
other servers (tried mcmaster.ca) +1 (likely success)

E-mail program:
getemail.sympatico.ca +2 (likely success)
sitemail.netnation.com +2
univmail.mcmaster.ca +2
Any web browser based e-mail source: +2
Outlook Express 0
Mozilla Thunderbird -1 (likely failure)

Message Format:
HTML +1 (likely success)
Plain Text -1 (likely failure)

Message Contents:
Repeat of previous message -1 (likely failure)
Different message contents +1 (likely success)
Overly simple message -1 (likely failure)
Ex of overly simple message, Subject: "Test", Body: "Test"

Reply to Message Sent from Hotmail: +10
(Replies to messages sent from Hotmail almost always go through.)

If the score is high, the message will go through. If you score too low,
the message to hotmail will be deleted.

Let's hope Microsoft keeps this up for a bit. That will kill of Hotmail for sure (there are enough alternatives that do work properly).

The information posted in the quote from Cassini confirms some of my findings. I have been documenting Hotmail's "black hole" behaviour for a while:

Thanks. I've added your link to my clippings for this issue.

I am having the exact same problem.

I can reply to any email, (hotmail or other), change the To: address to a hotmail account and it will send.

But if I write a New message and try to send it to a Hotmail account it looks as if it sends successfully, but it never arrives at the Hotmail account (inbox or junkbox). It just vanishes!

What the hell is going on!

Yet after contacting Microsoft they say nothing is wrong :(

They definately have some sort of Baysian e-mail filter.

Anyone know any way other than having to reply to messages for them to get through?

Tell your contacts to switch to GMail and/or Yahoo, maybe Microsoft will wake up and smell the coffee.

Since I run a small business, I never know who I am going to have to send information too :(
