This thread now replace the previous "Hotmail / Yahoo Extension" thread which has become unmanageable at 143 pages.

This extension will let thunderbird dowload email from hotmail/yahoo accounts.

You will need at least two of the following extensions
WebMail (required)
Hotmail (optional)
Yahoo (optional)
Lycos (optional)
Mail.Com (optional)
GMail (optional)
Libero (optional)
AOL (optional)

Mail account setup
servername : localhost
username : username@yahoo.com

POP Setup
port : 110 (default)

SMTP Setup
port : 25 (default)

Setup Instructions - by WildcatRay

With your browser (I assume it is Firefox), go to this page, go to "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page..." and save this so you can always get to the main WebMail page.

Click on "Downloads" on the left-hand side of the page. Download the WebMail, Hotmail and Yahoo extensions from this page. (Right-click the hyper links and then click on "Save Link As..." and save each of the extensions (the .xpi files) to a convenient folder. Desktop would be easiest for this.)

Open your Thunderbird and then "Tools > Extensions" to open your Extensions window. Click on the "Install" button and then "Desktop" on the left-hand side of the window that opens. Look for the WebMail extension. Click on it and then on the "Open" button. Follow any additional prompts to install the WebMail extension.

Repeat this same sequence for the Hotmail and Yahoo extensions you downloaded along with the WebMail extension.

Restart Thunderbird to complete the installation of these extensions.

With Firefox, go back to the WebMail site and click on "Account Setup" also on the left-hand side of the page. Follow the instructions to set up your Hotmail and Yahoo email accounts in Thunderbird.

I hope this helps you set up your accounts.

Thanks again! I posted at the end of the other thread but not sure if it will get responded too so I'm posting here.

I read a majority of the old thread but 143 pages iwould take me a few more days... I know my questions have been asked and addressed but please try and post answers for them for me here:

My questions:

1: downloading other folders: I saw a post that this functionality has been added for hotmail. I just downloaded the extensions this weekend. Is it necessary to install the "beta" version to get this functionality? - all I see is the junk mail option.

2. smtp folders: I know I can use my roadrunner server with all my webmail accounts but since the server doesn't match the from email address it gets filter to junk folders. My spam settings do not matter because my concern is with the people I send mail to. Is there a hotmail smtp server that is usable?

I have webdav access with hotmail cause I use to use outlook express to connect to it.

just recalling what these extensions are about. These extensions were (initially) providing the function of a POP3 server (according to the POP3 protocol). Then was added the function of an SMTP server.

We users are never satisfied - however free the product - and now folks (somewhat impatiently for we freeloaders) are chomping at the bit for IMAP functionality.

So, to try to answer your questions ...

Our developer recently added support for custom folders in Hotmail. The Inbox and Junk folders of Hotmail are not custom folders they are the default folders we all have, so they are and have been supported for quite a while.

Support for custom folders is not a standard POP3 function; this is a new function recently provided by our developer's hard work and freely given time. So, you do not get a drop down list of your custom folders to select from because this is not supported by the POP3 protocol built into Thunderbird or into Hotmail.

I find the support for custom folders works for WebDav, classic (old, free) Hotmail and for Hotmail Live Beta accounts.

To request your custom folders it is necessary in the Hotmail option to select the POP tab and then to specify by the "Add" button for Custom folders the name of the custom folder(s) in Hotmail you want to to be processed by the Hotmail extension.

SMTP support

Is provided (as of my most recent testing) for all of the Hotmail account types I mentioned above. The mail is sent through the http connection of the accounts and avoids the issues you have been experiencing sending through your ISP SMTP server.

You simply need to set up a SMTP server (in the Thunderbird SMTP servers) for your Hotmail account.

Server: localhost

Port: 25 (typically)

and with your account username/password.

I hope this helps.

You need Hotmail version 1.0.0 for the custom folders. The versions linked at the front of the other thread are not the most current.

hi Comodo Dragon,

I tried to use a port > 1024, but I'm still not able to access my Hotmail-Account with Thunderbird under Vista build 5456.5. Where can I download older versions? I want to upgrade from older versions to newer versions step by step to figure out with version broke the compatiblity on Vista. With a earlier version it works, but this shit autoupdate brokes the access to Hotmail :'-(

I added a folder using the options tab. Is there anything I need to do to make it appear. Is it necessary to manually create the folder in Thunderbird too?

Of course I read it. That's how I knew about the "options" tab. I went to extensions, hotmail extension, the pop tab and added the folder. However, it still doesnt appear and I am not sure what to do next. Maybe I missed something in reading your response.

By the way, setting outgoing server to localhost worked perfect - thanks.

apologies - I guess I did not fully understand your post.

When you ask the extension to process a custom folder of Hotmail it does simply that. Just as it reads your Inbox or JunkMail everything - including mail from your custom folders - goes to the default folder for your Hotmail mail. The Hotmail extension just reads the mail - it is pretending to be a POP3 server so it cannot direct where the mail will go in the mail client (the POP3 protocol is very old and very unsophisticated).

So, I am guessing that this is what you mean by it doesn't appear. If I have misunderstood please let me know.

If you have mail in a Hotmail folder called (let's say) SpecialFolder and you have asked the Hotmail extension to process SpecialFolder and you want it to be placed in SpecialFolder in your Thunderbird Hotmail account then you have to take some extra steps otherwise it will go to the Inbox for the Hotmail account.

Our developer has done what he can to help.

In the headers of the messages downloaded from custom folders there is inserted a line (in our example):

X-Folder: SpecialFolder

You would need to use the Filters function of Thunderbird (Tools > Filters) to set up a filter (or , if you like, a rule) that would move any new message containing "SpecialFolder" in the headers to the folder in Hotmail called SpecialFolder.

Does that help at all?

First off, kudos to Comodo Dragon for helping everyone here with the Webmail extension!

That said I've just installed hotmail-1-0-1.xpi with web-mail-1-0-9.xpi and now am getting the following alert from Thunderbird 1.5.0.4, "Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded; msn.com is a unsupported domain" . And sure enough, when I look at the supported POP list in webmail options under extensions in Thunderbird there is no entry for msn.com. There is an entry for msn.com.uk, so I am figuring this is just a small omission in the latest hotmail extension ;) It would be awesome to be able to get Thunderbird to download and send through my MSN email account because I've had it for a very long time and get lots of mail through it. I do have gmail and yahoo working though the webmail extension so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong with the MSN account entry. Just thought I'd let y'all know and hopefully someone can fix it and let me know. Thanks in advance :)

Edited to add that msn.com showed up after a restart of Thunderbird...my bad, disregard the above.

I've just downloaded the latest thunderbird client with the webmail & gmail extensions. When I try to retrieve mail I have 2 problems.

1. I get an error (pop up) saying "The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server localhost reponded: negative vibes (GMail)

2. When I retry to get mail is says downloading x of 100 but there are over 200 emails in my gmail account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brian

There's a article on Slashdot about the bugs in MS's new TCP/IP stack you could be running in to one of them.

Alpha testing is a dangerous game :D

Vista 54XX runs very smooth, it is more a RC, as a alpha or beta ;)
