I have got it from sourceforge and now everything works ok. It has something to do with .Net ...?
It works fine for me on Windows XP. Given that the official build is compiled with MSVC 6.0, it should not require any .NET DLLs. I have no idea why you're seeing this behaviour.

I got that same error when I first launched build 'Gecko/20040114 Firebird/0.7+'. It only happened the first time and never appeared again. This was on Win2K w/sp3. Haven't seen the error again and it was a clean install.

Can someone confirm whether search plugins are still broken?
I tried installing this build fresh (no previous install, no previous profiles) on Windows XP. The default Google search plugin shows up initially, and I can add searches from mycroft.mozdev.org fine. However, when I close and restart Firebird, none of the plugins show up, including Google. On a different XP machine, I had previously installed the newest build over a branch build, and none of my existing search plugins ever showed up afterwards. I tried searching Bugzilla and found nothing on this bug. I haven't been able to use the search bar since the first branch build of the year (01/14 I believe).

I've not tried a build from the 20th yet, but as the source code that created the search-plugin problem has not changed, I suspect the problem still exists.
