Firefox Extremely Slow

Hello,
I love firefox but lately for some unknown reason it has been lagging like crazy and taking up almost all my CPU power... I have to use one of my many other browsers just to post this cause if I used firefox it would take me around 5 minutes just to get here. Ok. Here is the problem. Before when I used firefox it worked fine. Then all the sudden one day I started it up and its been taking forever to load pages, not loading pages at all sometimes. It seems when I start it it works fine for about 1 hour. Then it starts to slow down till it barely moves or loads anything. I have scanned for viruses, spyware, and adware. I have checked my network setting, cleared cache, cookies, history, everything! And it continues to lag. I really don't want to have to use a different browser cause it is very annoying. My brother says its not just firefox its my computer but I doubt that. It worked fine before. So any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Mysixs

but it's true, i have verified this aswell, also firefox seems to get stuck sometimes, it's waiting for someother information to finish of a page loading, and this causes firefox not to respond until that info is needed,
but as for the slow down, deffiently happens, ecspecially when opening pages up at http://www.imdb.com/ seems ok for a while, but bit by bit, starts to slow down, until cpu usage is at 100%, deffiently something wrong, because if i close firefox, and reopen, all is well again, for a while any way, at the moment i'm putting firefox on low priority now just to compensate (so my system doesn't get bogged down), 1 last thing, i haven't logged in nor registered, first time i've seen a forum allowing people to post without having to register, it's a shame your forum software doesn't have a database of swear words and utilize blacklisting for example SH*T FU*K WANK*R ect.. as this is the first time i've posted, hell it's the first time i've had to come here (meaning great programming by you, talk about a solid browser) and straight away i saw the post above, people seem to get a good feeling seeing there own swear words, that feeling would be minimized if they only saw sh*t, and would help stop people using swear words, swearing doesn't look good, ecspecailly when all age groups could stumble across this forum, live long and prosper.

Mystixs, I have EXACTLY the same problem. I've tried installing the flash blocker, tweaking the pipelines et al, its still crap. FF 1.0 was MUCH better than this. The thing is, I also run sea monkey and it smooth as silk, runs perfectly fine. Firefox stalls on EVERY webpage that it loads, hangs for 3-10 second almost everytime I try and scroll, takes ~5 seconds to open a new window etc...basically, it worse than IE and that's saying something. FF has progressively gotten worse speed wise from release to release. Have tired coming up in safe mode, no change. And like I say, same machine, sea monkey is fine, reponsive and fast. So what am I doing wrong here? Any killer hints that can sort me out? John

well my firefox doesn't do that, your problem sounds different in the fact that you said it happens evry 3-11 seconds, weird,
try different web sites, reset your firfox settings uninstall all plugins and extendion, uninstall firefox, now install firefox, and just firefox alone, and try now, also run full ad-aware scan, lavasoft ad-aware peronsal is good, and so is spy sweeper, (don't use any fake ad-aware/spyware scanner), as these are actually spyware themselves, it's sound like you have a problem, most people don't have, sounds like somekind of incompatibility with something, where as the we are having takes time to show symptoms, and feels like somekind of fragmentation, your problem is deffiently something wrong with the install with firefox, or like i said above, a possible extension/plugin incompatibility....or dare i say it....something wrong with your system (system problem is unlikely though if your 2 other browsers are running ok) try the steps above i mentioned, and not forgetting to restart your pc after you have UNINSTALLED firefox before installing it again, safemode won't help, that only helps for IE.......you could try setting up a different windows account (DON'T USE WINDOWS ADMINISTRAITOR ACCOUNT, NEVER GO ONLINE WITH THIS ACCOUNT) just set up another user account, and install in that account, a different account will be cleaner and you may have more luck,

assumeing you have windows xp SP2, hold down ctrl alt del,
and go into task manager, now go into processes, have a look at the bottom left, your windows xp optimal condition is Processes between 20-35 (35 being max) this is a good way to see how healthy a paticular system is, not 100%, but a good clue to see how bogged down your system is, with anti-virus and firewall software installed, then you will more and like be pushing the early 30's, but if you have more then say 40-45 processes running then this is a good indication of reinstalling your windows,

FF 1.5.0.7 is really slow compared to the 1.0 version. I remember back in those days when surfing was actually FASTER and EASIER than IE, but now, it's no different.

I think I'm experiencing the same problem. Suddenly Firefox has started freezing up whenever I push a button or open a new window or whatever. Actually, while I'm writing this it's already frozen three times. This is what I get for about five seconds:

Just a though i was recently having a problem where after around 70%
to 80% of the page was loaded the cpu usage jumped to a 100% for a few seconds and slowed the loading down i thought this was a comodo firewall problem but after i uninstalled it and installed sygate instead the problem was still there, but someone suggested a clean profile so i deleted the old one and fresh installed the extensions i was using and other essentials and my web browsing has returned to normal quick speed. just wondering whether a corrupt file in the profile was causing the problem, Rhys

If someone could comment on any possible causes of this problem, that would be great. I am having similar symptoms, generally extreme CPU usage coupled with ordinary (for firefox) RAM usage while surfing normally. I've tried swapping profiles, removing extensions/themes, reinstalling, and even moving up to RC1 without any reliable change in this frequent CPU-eating behavior. I'm running XP Home on a P4 3.0Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, ~10% free HD space, and I've run well enough malware scans to know it's not that kind of problem. My virus scanner is Trend Micro OfficeScan, but I can't turn it off because it's required by the university and I'll be disconnected from the network if I do. No other apps are affected (except for slowing down when FF acts up.)
Any ideas, community or support team?

Will they let you use another AV product? Have you disabled Java to see if that may be a problem? you may need to update to the latest version You see, but you do not observe. Sherlock Holmes

Our university uses Cisco Clean Access Agent as network authentication, which requires that OfficeScan be running upon login and checks it for latest virus definition files as they are released. No OfficeScan (on a windows machine) means no internet access, period.
I'll check Java next, thanks.

Hi gang,
Noticed very recently same symptoms described in most of the above posts... What seems to have worked for me was to DELETE the history.dat file... I wana' emphasize and make it very clear, I didn't clear the history but rather deleted that file... Like having ignited a booster rocket in FF's "behind"... I suggest you guys try it and post back your experiences... If you don't want to lose your history then you can just rename the file (need to close FF)...

After installing new Java and deleting history.dat files, I would appear to be experiencing the same problem. As a test, could someone tell me how long this URL SHOULD take to load on a proper copy of Firefox?

On my computer it takes about 35 sec.

Okay, as much as I might be jumping the gun, I think I've solved the problem. I completely wiped out the Mozilla folder, and removed all Firefox entries from the registry. I haven't had a CPU usage issue since, and things seem to be going much smoother in general with less stuttering and waiting.
Looks like a completely clean install was all it took...haven't had to do one of those in awhile on this PC. I can only assume it was some leftover file in the Mozilla directory or an outdated registry entry. If this installation acts up again, I'll repost in this thread.
