Tabinta is a Firefox extension that lets you insert tab characters in multi-line text input fields.
The name itself is a shorthand for "Tab in Textarea". For more info and installation, see its home page: http://tabinta.mozdev.org/

Love the extension - works great for code view in blogging. But one thing I wondered is if it would be possible to turn it off on a site/field id basis? Main issue is with gmail - you can't tab out of the to field into subject when it's on. Or better yet, have a hotkey for it so it's quick to adjust?

I will think about an implementation of this.

Tabinta 0.4 has been released. It has some basic support for site/field level customization.

Question - any plans to add an autoindent/hanging indent feature? For example, if I tab out to the third tab stop and hit enter, if this option were active it would add the three necessary tabs to the beginning of the new line.
I'm not sure if this functionality belongs in the extension or not - but it would sure be sweet for me Also, I have been using tabinta for ages and it is just plain awesome. It should even be integrated into the firefox distribution - hey, if spellcheck makes the cut, why not tabinta?

Thanks for your kind words. I think that there are good alternative extensions for advanced text editing, e.g. <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4125">It's All Text!</a>. Therefore tabinta tries to focus on this particular tabbing problem and nothing more.

OK, I understand. Tabinta plays really nicely with the <a href="http://www.duckwizard.com/2007/08/02/updates-to-syntax-editor/">syntax highlighting editor</a> I've been working on; autoindent would have been even sweeter, but I could just add this to the component itself (although it would be nice if it were user-configurable at the browser level like tabinta is).
Anyway, thanks for Tabinta, it's probably become one of the two extensions (along with firebug) that I couldn't live without.

Firefox 3 is supported in recent versions.

It still won't let me install Tabinta in Firefox3. Didn't you just say it was supposed to be supported? Any ideas when this will work?
I LOVE Tabinta! Thanks!

This works great in Gmail. However it doesn't work so well with Zimbra. The behavior looks like it's doing a tab (8 spaces) and another 'real' tab by shifting the focus to the next focusable object. I'm willing to help figure out what this issue is, can you please point me the appropriate spot? I'm currently looking at tabintaOverlay.js
Thanks
