synchronizing thunderbird on two computers

Hi,
I have two (non-networked) computers, but I want to check my mail through thunderbird on each. I also need the thunderbird to be synchronized on both computers so that when I do something with my e mail on one, it is reflected on the other as well. I know that this can be done because I have one account (university) that can do this. However, my gmail account is NOT synchronized through thunderbird and I dont even get the same messages! I have checked that all of the account settings are the same. Is this a glitch in gmail?
