Beryl + Intel 945 GMA on Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Post by Metalstream »

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to install Beryl but I need video acceleration isn't it?...
So I updated my Intel driver from i8xx to 9xx with synaptics so I restart blah blah....
And open the console, so I wanted to test If I had video acceleration and I inserted this command line

Code: Select all

~$ glxinfo | grep direct

But Ubuntu shows me "Direct rendering: No"

Well I don't wanna loss time, so guys if Beryl can't be installed with this graphic accelerator just tell me... I haven't found any article where says Beryl + Intel GMA...

Thanks in advance.

Well I have now installed beryl...After damage my xorg.conf....(yes I gnored Frank's post xD and his recovery mode didn't worked for me)

So I used the following steps...
1. Restart
2. Recovery mode
3

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

4. Select your graphic accelerator
5. Select you screen wide
6. Restart, and that's all... well it worked for me...

How I installed beryl?
1. System ---> Manage ---> Synaptics ---> Search and write "Compiz"(without the "")---> Install all compiz packages
2. Restart
3. System ---> Preferences ---> Desktop Effects ---> Enable Desktop Effects
4. Open a Terminal and write

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

5. Add the following lines

Code: Select all

deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/ feisty main
deb-src http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main

6.

Code: Select all

wget http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org/root@lupine.me.uk.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

7.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

8.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install beryl emerald-themes

9.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install beryl-manager

10.

Code: Select all

sudo beryl-manager

11. System ---> Preferences ---> Sessions ---> Start up Programs ---> Add
Name: Beryl
Command : beryl-manager
This step is for running Beryl everytime at start up.

***NOTE*** Before making all this you need to update your graphic card or accelerator video via Synaptics.

Useful info. VERY useful. I was wondering if this should be stickied like Frank's topic as well for those who'll want to get the quick steps on how to install/run Beryl on their Intel Graphics? Or if it should be added to Frank's list? Hmm... but that's a "how to" more of what to do once up and running for basic configuration, what Frank has started, right MetalStream?

Still... this is very valuable info that should remain near the top where so many here are switching to Linux. :)

Thanks for posting this too MS. :)

1. Restart
2. Recovery mode
3 sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Recovery mode shouldn't be necessary in most cases. Even if your display is borked (and not just misconfigured) Ctrl+Alt+F1 will get you to a text-only terminal where you can log in and issue that command.

You can use aiglx or xgl, I believe. They don't require Direct Rendering. It uses Indirect Rendering however it will be slower. At least I think Also, You need to manually add stuff to your xorg.conf file.
I don't know which version of Ubuntu you are using, so here is the link. The official wiki is offline, so here is an archive link for Ubuntu installations

Well maybe there are a lot of ways to solve that don't you think it?
I just posted the way that worked for me...

Good Idea... maybe if a moderator wants to stick the post...by my side there is no problem sharing this information...

BTW I'm n00b using GNU/Linux... I use GNU/Linux since more than 1 year...

Cheers.

Yep. I was just posting another way of solving it, I didn't say yours was the wrong way.

Sounds good to me.

Can people post some more about this:
"I also have to check on i8xx/i9xx bit "

I have an Intel GMA 950 - xorg recognises it as an Intel 945

I am using Dapper.

I am (was?) going to buy a video card to run beryl/compiz/xgl - do I need to?

PS: this saved me starting the thread I was about an hour away from posting such a thread when this appeared.

A problem here...
After configuring Ubuntu to launch Beryl at startup... I've been experimenting a really low speed start up at Ubuntu...
Has anyone this issue?

I don't autostart it... So I Don't know. If you don't autostart is it low startup speeds
Edit: I mean if you start beryl manually, does beryl startup slow.

No... when I start beryl manually it starts faster... with the autostart... Ubuntu "freezes" at start up...
I think beryl should load well at start up without freeze Ubuntu isn't it?
