I am currently using Firefox version 2.0.0.14 and recently upgraded my Grisoft AVG virus protection software to version 8.0.100 and began noticing Firefox shutting down automatically due to "Firefox is not responding" errors, especially when navigating back and forth between pages. After disabling AVG Safe Search within Firefox (the add-in that puts green check marks next to Google search results that have been checked out to be legitimate) the errors stopped immediately. I do have other add-ins installed and the error could be caused by a conflict with the Safe Search add-in and one of them. I have not tried disabling them all but the Safe Search one, then turning them back on one by one to isolate a particular one. The add-ins I also have enabled are:

DOM Inspector 1.8.1.14
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 2.0.45
Gmail Manager 0.5.4
Hyperwords 3.6
PicLens 1.6.3.2361
StumbleUpon 3.18
Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Hi Rexmons,
AVG v8 has been noted to cause a few glitches/errors with a few programs.
If Firefox now works O.K., then I'd suggest that you leave it disabled.
It doesn't really do much, AFAICS. (IMHO).
If you want to fault find, try Firefox "Safe Mode" to eliminate any extensions/themes..

I've had similar problems with FF 2.0.0.14. After reading your post I too disabled AVG Safe Search within Firefox and the problems seemed to have disappeared. Thanks for your input.

Yes, unchecking AVG "Enable search-shield" in the "link scanner" group of AVG version 8.5.285 cured the Firefox crashes. This is being referred to as the "Safe Search" feature in AVG but in the new "free" version I never saw it called that.

Thanks for the feedback but this thread is months old.
I doubt whether the OP is still monitoring it.
Locking.
