gecko

Post by jx3000 »

Oh gosh I can't remember the terminology used. But basically I remember that it was once said that the gecko engine would slimmed down and made better for embedding.

eg. the reason apple chose khtml over gecko because it was easier for them.

I wonder what has happened about this since then.

I haven't seen any news about it.

Apple went with Khtml because they could control it easier.

Gecko isn't hard to embed, tons of products are doing this already.

Which products are using Gecko for embedding?

myIE2 does it via the ActiveX control, Epiphany, Galeon, K-Meleon, Camino, Firefox, Mozilla, Beonex, Aphrodite, Netscape, WaMCom, and a couple more.

Well, Camino, Firefox, Mozilla, Beonex,Netscape, WaMCom, do not embed it, they have apps that use it.

AOL uses/used to, Eclipse.org uses it for browsers on non-windows platforms, for example.

Okay I found something I was referring to.
http://www.mozilla.org/browser-innovation.html

In particular where they say,
Everything we've seen suggests that KHTML has a ways to go to catch up with rendering real web pages. At the same time, Gecko should become smaller and simpler. We've seen significant improvements during the last year, and we anticipate continued refinements. We've achieved an exceptional ability to render the web, now we're looking at maintaining that compatibility while eliminating unnecessary overhead.
