What is it?

<img src="http://komodo.nique.net/~grayrest/nicetitle.png">

Nice titles is an extension that provides additional information for a link. It will appear both when hovering and when doing typeahead find. If the link provides a title (as shown above), the title is displayed. Otherwise, the text of the link is displayed. In both cases, the url is also shown.

Who's idea?

Seems the idea originated with safari and nate at <a href="http://www.web-graphics.com/mtarchive/000778.php">webgraphics</a>, it was then picked up by <a href="http://www.kryogenix.org/code/browser/nicetitle/">Stuart Langridge</a>, who implemented it for web pages (you can see his demo by following the link). It was brought up by astray in <a href="http://www.mozillazine.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9129&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15">this mz thread</a> and went through incubation there. I figured I'd start a new thread for all the people who don't read threads that have already started.

Why?

Initially to prove I could, but it turns out to be nice for sites with really small text, sites with mystery meat images for navigation, and those that javascript the status bar.

Where to get it?

Get it <a href="http://komodo.nique.net/~grayrest/nicetitle.xpi">here</a>.

I've corrected all the problems that have been mentioned and quite a few that haven't, so if you run into problems either post them here or email me.

Very nice to see this extension progress. And I like how everything is fixed font now. Great job on making this. :)

Any possible way to make this fade in/out? Ok, yeah, I'm just dreaming...

Yes, but it'd kill slower computers like mine, so I really don't want to implement it. ;]

Remember to tell djst so the Firebird Help site will be updated and we don't have newbies wandering around asking what Nice Titles is :-)

Its been really straightforward to customize the popups. Uhh, I think the file can be found in Phoenix directory/chrome/content/nicetitle/nicetitle.css

Anyway, I changed the opacity, font, size, and alignment of my boxes... They are now more transparent, have white centered text, which is 10pt in size. :)

I think this would be more useful if it was only activated when using a modifier key such as Shift. It's mostly just annoying but can be quite useful sometimes, so it would be cool if it just popped up if I Shift+hovered a link.

I think that in Safari it's only used when dragging links.

Nice, this is the first I'd heard of it (thanks for creating a new thread).

A couple of thoughts; most of the URLs that I look at are very long, and therefore are cut off before I see the end. When I want to look at a URL, I'm looking at two things: what domain is it, and what's the file extension. I'm not sure what the "best" implementation for this would be; perhaps a 3rd line that describes the file suffix?

It would also be neat if there was some sort of indication if the link plans to open a new window (doesn't matter to me, since I use TBE to force it to work the way I want, but might be good for others). I like that javascript links are already identified.

Nitpick: if the link is at the very bottom of the page, the box renders offscreen.

Very very nice except for the cutting off of longer URLs. Good work.

I think the best solution would be to cut out the middle and replace w/ ... if it's over a certain amount of chars.

I'm with djst in that I would like some sort of modifier or maybe if you could put in a user-adjustable time before it pops up.

Yeah, yeah, and yeah. It's cool but it's huge. I don't know if I'd bother to press shift to get it and I don't think I want it everywhere (like this forum where almost everything is a link.) Hmm.

I have seen sites do this to my Phoenix recently. It looked similar, but worked more chunkily. The only one I can remeber is http://www.emptybottle.org/ (a blog with definite w3c problems but with a pro-Moz attitude) which now shows NiceTitles instead of what it did before. Maybe I should check after deinstalling....

EDIT: yup. On certain links I get a NiceTitles like alt tag. I just took it for granted but I suppose someone could tell me how it works. And check out the avant-garde-but-non-standard layout that this person is attempting. Scrolling is juddery in my Phoenix and w3c chokes so hard it's laughable but, hey, it's different.

very nice extension, gj :) but how about having a delay between poining of the cursor and when the tooltip comes up, and have the delay time be esily changable by the end user.

And also how option to only show URL, and/pr other info, because the title can be already seen on the page.

I like this, but I wish I could change the delay!
