installed newest thunderbird, questions

Post by karenanne »

I dragged myself from an old version of Windows and thunderbird onto Windows 10 and whatever the version of thunderbird that now downloads.

I have grubbed around and managed to find a lot of things, but i still have some questions I hope you will answer, thanks.

All the new emails I have gotten since I started bringing up thunderbird yesterday now have the sort by junk column with that thing red for each of those emails. They were fine when I shut down the laptop yesterday, What does this mean, something decided all the recent messages are junk?

Can I turn off whatever scans incoming email to decide if it is junk? I almost never get junk mail, so this is just a nuisance.

Is there anyway to remove the threads concept completely once and for all?

I can't find the old features (1) set delete trash or not on exit and (2) set when replying to a message include or not the replied to message. I don't want to have to set this for each message I reply to.

Can I somehow delete the icons in the vertical column at the far left that I will never use, like chat?

Thank you,

Karen

How to stop threading of messages
http://support.mozilla.org/questions/1216859

1.

Menu Bar > Tools > Account Settings > Account > Server Settings > Message Storage > Empty Trash on Exit

Use the mail.server.default.empty_trash_on_exit pref to change the default for all accounts.

2.

Menu Bar > Tools > Account Settings > Account > Composition & Addressing > Automatically quote...

Use the mail.identity.default.auto_quote pref to change the default for all accounts.

...

You can hide the toolbar with the chat button by clicking the "Hide Spaces Toolbar" button in the bottom left corner.

You can hide the chat button using the userChrome.css file.

Code: Select all

/* Thunderbird userChrome.css */

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");

#chatButton,
#spacesPopupButtonChat {
  display: none !important;
}
http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css

Remember to set the toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets pref to true, then restart.

I found on the web how to turn off junk filtering. These aren't exactly the words, since I'm on my old laptop, but close enough for government work:

right click on the account name, settings, junk setting, turn off enable.

If I select the account name, when I go to View, Sort is greyed out. It would work if I selected a folder. But do I actually have to set this for each folder (and all future created folders?) There is no way to banish threading to the outer darkness for everything?

See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/me ... er-folders for applying settings to folders, and right below that, how to change the default thread mode.

I used to use the Next button on message windows a lot. Is it lurking around somewhere, or can I somehow add it? Thanks.

Seek and ye shall find on the web, although i haven't gotten to trying it on the new laptop yet:

"Right click the Mail Toolbar and select Customize. Add any buttons that you like from there."

#2 is a BUG:

I got quite aways along, and had my gmail account in place, then I tried to add the account my ISP Cox provides.

1 I realize this is an idiot question and I should have done a screengrab, but near the end of installing the ISP account, the process sort of asked me if I wanted to link up some stuff. I had not seen this when I installed the first account. Also there was no way to say yes or no and no explanation of what the stuff was. So I clicked continue or whatever the button was. Would like to know what was going on there.

2. Separately, I tested sending and receiving email

The gmail account receives email from everything I tried including the ISP account. It sent successfully to several places but email it sent to the ISP account never arrived.

The ISP account sent email successfully to everything I tried including the gmail account and it received email from several places but not from the gmail account.

I then went up to the browser, logged into my gmail account, send an email to the ISP account, and it arrived.

So something is broken in thunderbird with sending email from the gmail account to the ISP account...
