Supernova is super slow

Post by ldup »

Since the update to Supernova, downloading emails (headers only) through IMAP is super slow...

We have some larges mailboxes that are checked on occasion only.
So, there are large amounts of emails to download.
This is now super super slow. That was blazzing fast previously.(We select "header only") .

While this doesn't help your today problem, this is fixed in future versions. I am currently using 120.0b5 and moving from mail to mail on my Gmail account is now as fast as it used to be. I think this was actually fixed in v 118 but I could be wrong. Doesn't help when you don't even have the release version installed to know what the current release version is. :P

Hi! If you're asking me, yes. The beta version is still working well for me.

Production version seems to be fine for me, too. Tb 115.6 on Endeavour OS (an Arch derivative, btw :D )

Hi,

Problem never solved on the 115 branch. (currently 115.6)

There still no sign of Thunderbird 120 on a production channel so I did not try.
( I've blocked upgrade and our users are still on TB 102.)

I just tried 122.0.b2.

It seems much better. Large mailbox sync seems to be reasonably fast.
The main point is that the sync is done on the background and does not freeze the entire Thunderbird.

Correction. event though it's better, it's still quite slow to sync large mailboxes.
We're talking about 10k+ emails.

In addition there is thereafter a seemingly permanent CPU activity in the background, writing small chunk in the global-messages-db-sqlite-journal.
Small writes are bad for VDI infrastructure relying on block storage over iscsi / FC.

TB 124.0b4

Downloading / Synchonizing large mailboxes (IMAP) is still super-slow but....
if you change the focus to another mailbox after clicking on a large one, then it's *much much* faster. I'd even say extremely fast... (We're talking about 40K emails )

So the slowness has definitely to do with the display rendering.

Good to know, because there are known issues in this area that are being worked on.

Your posting has nothing to do with this thread.
You would best use the new topic button with an appropriate title.

Not sure if any of those is related.Maybe those related to quickfilter because it involves repainting a whole list of emails.
I can say for sure that the slow rendering is still there in TB 125.0b1.
Easy to reproduce : Have a large IMAP mailbox to sync (several thousands of emails). Click on it. The sync is slow. Click on another (empty) mailbox. Sync of the previous mailbox is finished in a flash.
