update seamonkey in ubuntu22.04 issue

Post by nikos_bo »

Hi all,
I cannot update Seamonkey on Ubuntu 22.04.
SM version is 2.53.17.1, it should update to 2.53.18. Seamonkey folder is in /usr/local/.
I obtain a general error when I check About: page.
Error says "it's impossible to install update, check that other copies of SM are running on the laptop, then reload SM to retry."
Any idea? Seamonkey is running with user I'm logged in Ubuntu.

I add that if I extract seamonkey-2.53.18.2.it.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 in a subfolder of Home, and I execute SM, it works. Is it correct to have SM under /usr/local ?

Image Well, if you already have SeaMonkey installed, in /usr/local/ just do the following:

Code: Select all

wget https://archive.seamonkey-project.org/releases/2.53.18.2/linux-x86_64/it/seamonkey-2.53.18.2.it.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

sudo tar -xvjf https://archive.seamonkey-project.org/releases/2.53.18.2/linux-x86_64/it/seamonkey-2.53.18.2.it.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 -C /usr/local/seamonkey

rm https://archive.seamonkey-project.org/releases/2.53.18.2/linux-x86_64/it/seamonkey-2.53.18.2.it.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

sudo ln -sf /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

And you're done. Image

In /usr/local/ normal users don't have write permissions. But, in this case you do have sudo privileges.

You can install SeaMonkey wherever you want (... /opt/, /usr/local/, /home/<your user>/ ... etc)

Yes you need read/write permissions for the folder to do internal updates which is why if you are the only user then having folder in Home keeps things simple.

Thanks for fast reply.
With commands suggested by ElTxolo, I could update. Now I don't see SM in the app listed by ubuntu, is there a way to recover it?

Image Please note, that you have used a tarball (.tar.bz2) file, to install SeaMonkey 2.53.18.2

Therefore, since it is not a .deb file, it will NOT appear in the applications installed by Ubuntu. Image

if you want it to appear in the applications installed by Ubuntu. You should remove the tarball and then, install the Ubuntuzilla .deb file
