Wondering if I could get some info on this file folder
in the cache2 folder there is a sub folder named *entries*, it's in here that the files grow in size enormously...
every time one goes into a website info is stored in this folder, after a few days use of the browser the file population has grown to near 700mb (3 times the size of the browser (program files) itself).
I'm seeing this on a regular basis watching the size of the op/sys in its partition grow in concert with the population of this file.
Is this cache file absolutely necessary? I delete the entries, the op/sys size shrinks to match, open the browser, go back to my usual browsing habits, the file entries repopulate & the cache2 file grows again.

dont know what pages you visit, but if firefox need to cache files then its filled. its not clever to disable cache as it makes firefox very slow, even on a gigabit fiber. my cache is currently 1048352 KiB ~1023,8 MebiByte ~ 1Gigabyte. i have visited less than 10 sites till clearing. my disk has 1 terabyte so whats 1 gigabyte? i dont care.

Issue resolved,
not having used Firefox last since version 46, there used to be the ability for the user to go into the Tools/Settings/Preferences and adjust manually the amount of hard drive space the temp cache was allowed to occupy.
Apparently that's gone (I discovered that), one has 2 options...clear the cache when the browser is shut down, or, not clear it at all. I prefer to Not clear the cache, after doing some online searching I came across the *new* method....one has to go into about:config and make the alteration there.
The default space allotted is near 1 gig, that's a lot of hard drive space for a Huge number of little entries that are between 10 & 100kbs each.
So I adjusted the size of the max cache capacity from near 1 gig to 150mb, for me this is more than enough, at 700mb cache size there were more than 28000 entries in there that were dropped when the cache was cleared.
Right now at 40mb occupied space there are 1300 entries, I feel that 150mb space will more than suffice.
Limpet235 or Dan....perhaps you could reinstate that old user setting ability in the tools folder once again.

Re: cahe2 file in local/profiles/*username*
if you tried to use such old profile:
you should consider that a lot of changes have happened and nothing is comparable to such old crap.
export bookmarks as html, thats all you can do.
create a fresh profile, start from scratch and import bookmarks.
and yes, firefox have changed so much. anyhow it has the smallest footprint for data and memory usage ever in its history, and still improving. and you should forget any tweaks or aluhelmet switches, or never get involved to that - it has no gain, in fact it slows firefox down, create false website results (rendering), and changes exprience for secure browsing - no the negative.
if your used machine is that old that firefox runs slow - change machine, dont screw firefox as never will be effective.
